-Tested my starter motor with a battery charger and it's making a weird noise like tharrrrrrm thurrrrrrm and not doing anything else i tapped on the solenoid tested it again all that did was make the noise sound a bit different any idea whats wrong? and would it be easy to fix by an auto electrician? You could probably try to fix it yourself. Starters aren't worth having a mechanic fix. The time it takes them ends up costing more than if you just purchase a new starter, or like a refurbished one. Try taking it apart and seeing if you can diagnose the problem, I did it with mine and it ended up only costing me 70 cents instead of spending 110 bucks on a refurbished one.A battery charger will not supply the amperage needed to engage the solenoid, let alone drive the starter motor.
ADDED: If you have used your powerful charger to test starters before, and this one isn't working, why are you asking the question? Get it fixed. The difference between you and me is that I could fix it myself.
You can swap it for a reconditioned model, much cheaper that buying a new one.
Getting it repaired would take time and render your car immobile.
Phone around to get a good quote, in the UK i'd expect to pay 拢50-100 for a reconditioned starter.
The way you explain the noise sounds like the starter motor is spinning but the bendix is not throwing the gear out to engage with the flywheel. If you see the starter gear spin but not kick out replace the starter motor.
you need a new starter. the bendix is bad in yours.
