-i have an 89 civic. it just recently started shutting off while driving. it doesnt lose all power. but the engine basically shuts off and i can usually start it back up while coasting . but i did end up having to pull on the side of the road and took awhile to get it to start it would start with no problem then die. then finally started and drives perfect but cuts off here and there. and my oil light flashes everyonce in awhile. is there something loose like a wire or? like i said when its running its fine. there isnt any engine problems , so im assuming its a connectionYour oil pressure sensor may be bad. When it senses there is low oil, it shuts motor off. I would look for a shorted wire under the hood. if you can't find one, locate the oil pressure sensor and wiggle the wire. That will fix it.
Check on the oil pressure switch. some vehicles will shut down completley if there is a problem with the oil pressure switch.
There must be something wrong with your oil, you should probably get it fixed.
can u pull codes on that old of a civic?could be a fuel probelem or does it start breaking down like it has a bad coil? does it miss a little before it does it> or just shut off? bad fule filter full of goo, mine has a low oil pressure sensor that shut the engine off if the oil presuure is low, figured that one out in the middle of an intersectionturnng left , it pulled it away from the sensor and stalled erith there, figured it out hours laterin the hot sun, DOH, ,yeah!,,, water inthe fuel> there all kinds of possibilities 89 copulod have a bad catlyutic converter full of soot is it losing power as well struggling to accel;reate. does it have an egr valve that is full of carbonadn crap and sticking when it should close freely causeing a vacuum problem stalling it, i cant think of anything else right now, ohh check the wires to the coil and make sure they are tighted and not freyed, thats all i got,.god luck,
