-Old alternator stopped charging (battery light on). Bought a new reconditioned alternator. Van did not appear to charge. Charged the battery overnight and van started but needed recharged every couple of days. I have put a meter across the battery and am only getting 12.3 volts. I believe I should be getting about 14 if the alternator is working. Am I correct?
I read on the box of the new unit something about needing specialist testing equipment to test the alternator. At 12.3 volts across the battery can I assume the alternator isn't working.
I would appreciate your help. The old alternator my have killed the battery and or the new alternator may not be able to charge it. Check all terminals and connections to see that they are clean. If this doesn't help go to a garage and have them test them both or you can buy a power gauge probably cheap and then you will have one for the future use
check your voltage regulator
